Cafe Torre

New Italian. This restaurant, a gem tucked away in an unassuming little mall, has a crisp, sophisticated interior. Patron loyalty is built through the warm and congenial hosts. Even better is the great pasta and seafood. Beer, wine.

Eatery boasts full wine bar

A Mediterranean-style bistro, the newly opened Cafe Torre is both wine bar and restaurant with a wide variety of food and drink.

Cafe Torre, which opened two weeks ago, provides a soothing atmosphere. White tablecloths and tiger lilies adorn the tables. Relaxing European music plays softly in the background. A little alcove with tables and mounted bottles of wine adds to the charm. On the walls hang original watercolors of Mediterranean settings. "I wanted to create a nice, cozy atmosphere," said Vince Torre, owner of Cafe Torre.

Torre previously owned Cafe Marcella in Los Gatos, which he recently sold and replaced with Cafe Torre. Both restaurants share the same staff. The difference between the two, Torre said, is the food at Cafe Torre is more Italian, a tribute to Torre's own Italian ancestry. Cafe Torre offers a different lunch special every day, such as pork medallions ($12.95) or baked salmon ($13.95). Dinners run from $9.95 to $21.95 for entrees, including such delicacies as steamed mussels with white wine and rack of lamb.

Cafe Torre's also boasts a newly built wine bar with a cheerful wood surface. "I was always interested in wines," Torre said. "Wines are my passion. The food came later."

Sometimes, he said, customers are not interested in a full meal. "They can just sit at the bar and have an appetizer and wine," Torre said. A wide variety of wines can be found at Cafe Torre, from sparkling to whites to reds. A glass of wine ranges from $4.25 to $15.50. A bottle runs from $16 to $40.

Cafe Torre is at 20343 Stevens Creek Boulevard, between De Anza Boulevard and Torre Avenue. It is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch, 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for dinner. Weekend hours are Saturday and Sunday 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. For more information, call 257-2383.
